LONDON (AP) \u2014 Expectation is building that U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer<\/span> will set out a timetable for his resignation as soon as Monday, conceding to pressure from his Labour Party to hand over the reins of power.<\/p>\n

If he does, Starmer will be the sixth prime minister in a decade to stand outside 10 Downing Street and announce a premature departure.<\/p>\n

Starmer spent the weekend pondering his future following the victory of intraparty rival Andy Burnham<\/span> in a special election<\/span> for a seat in Parliament. Burnham, until last week the Labour mayor of Greater Manchester, ran with the aim of challenging Starmer<\/span> for leadership of the party and the country.<\/p>\n

Burnham is due to be sworn in as a member of Parliament on Monday.<\/p>\n

Starmer\u2019s office declined to comment on resignation reports, but Business Secretary Peter Kyle said Sunday that Starmer is \u201cmaking time to reflect on the political realities, challenges and opportunities that he finds himself in.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear whether Burnham would face a coronation or a challenge, if Starmer steps aside. Wes Streeting<\/span>, who resigned as health secretary last month to protest Starmer\u2019s leadership, has said that he will run in a contest if there is one.<\/p>\n

Discontent with the prime minister has been building for months, with Labour lawmakers desperate to reverse the government\u2019s decline in popularity since Starmer led the center-left party to a landslide election victory<\/span> in July 2024.<\/p>\n

He has struggled to deliver promised economic growth, repair tattered public services<\/span> and ease the cost of living, and has been hamstrung by repeated missteps<\/span>, including his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson<\/span>, a scandal-tarnished friend of Jeffrey Epstein, as the U.K. ambassador to the United States.<\/p>\n

Labour is losing liberal voters to the growing Green Party and facing a rising Reform UK<\/span>, the Nigel Farage<\/span> -led anti-immigration party that consistently leads in nationwide opinion polls.<\/p>\n

U.S. President Donald Trump weighed in even before an announcement, linking Starmer\u2019s potential exit to two of his recurring bugbears: immigration and renewable energy.<\/p>\n
