TYRE, Lebanon (AP) \u2014 Adnan Kaour returned on Thursday to check on his home in southern Lebanon<\/span> \u2018s coastal city of Tyre \u2014 once known as an idyllic summer getaway spot \u2014 just a week after Israel issued warnings for all of its residents<\/span> to evacuate. <\/p>\n

The warnings were followed by sweeping airstrikes on the city, which Israel said targeted the Lebanese Hezbollah militant group. <\/p>\n

What Kaour found back in Tyre, shattered his hopes \u2014 his dream family apartment overlooking the shimmering Mediterranean Sea was a heap of rubble and shattered glass. <\/p>\n

His return coincided with the announcement of an agreement between the United States and Iran to end the war<\/span> in the Middle East. The deal also calls for an end to the war in Lebanon<\/span>, where Israel has been fighting Hezbollah, but it\u2019s unclear what that means in practice.<\/p>\n

Israel and Hezbollah are not parties to the agreement. Iran insists Israel must withdraw from the large swath of southern Lebanon it is occupying, but the wording of the interim deal doesn\u2019t explicitly require that and only ensures Lebanon\u2019s \u201cterritorial integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/span> has yet to comment following the signing of the deal though Israel has vowed to keep its troops in Lebanon while Hezbollah says it\u2019s committed to resisting Israel. Fighting between the two sides, which was still underway on Wednesday in villages and towns of southern Lebanon, could derail the deal.<\/p>\n

Many hope the US-Iran deal signals better times<\/h2>\n

For residents in the south of crisis-battered Lebanon, hopes of better times are mixed with skepticism \u2014there had been too many ceasefire announcements that had failed to halt the fighting.<\/p>\n

Kaour lives in Germany, but spends most of the summer in Tyre. Last month, when an Israeli strike hit their street without warning, he was a abroad with his family.<\/p>\n

When he returned, he saw his building, with a popular sweets shop and an electronics store on the ground floor, was still standing, unlike surrounding structures \u2014 buildings that were all leveled to the ground. <\/p>\n

But the walls and the windows of his apartment had been blasted out. He was relieved his family had not been there, he said. They all survived.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m hopeful for peace, and God willing this is the end of the war, and everyone can go back to their homes,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are living abroad, but our minds are here in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n
