LONDON (AP) \u2014 Britain is investigating a sanctioned tanker<\/span> that is suspected of being part of the Russian \u201cshadow fleet,\u201d<\/span> shipping oil in violation of international sanctions over Moscow\u2019s war on Ukraine<\/span>, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Sunday.<\/p>\n

British armed forces boarded and detained the vessel, the Smyrtos, on Sunday in the English Channel, in what the country\u2019s Defense Ministry called \u201cthe first UK-led operation of its kind.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vessel will be held and monitored off the south coast of England for investigation, according to a statement by the Defense Ministry. The operation was carried out \u201cin close coordination\u201d with French authorities, who have previously intercepted a number of vessels<\/span> linked to the \u201cshadow fleet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russia is believed to be using a fleet of hundreds of ships to evade sanctions over its war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin\u2019s war in Ukraine that they cannot hide,\u201d Starmer said.<\/p>\n

U.K. authorities said that such operations were \u201cdirectly bearing down on the resources sustaining Russia\u2019s aggression in Ukraine and reducing its capacity to threaten security across Europe and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n
