Beijing has been increasing pressure in recent years on the democratically governed island that it claims as its own territory.<\/p>\n<p>Two lawmakers reached by the AP on Thursday rejected the demand for an apology, while the other two could not be immediately reached. New Zealand\u2019s government said it would express concern about the travel bans to Beijing.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The elected officials visited Taipei in May, as New Zealand parliamentarians have done \u201cfor decades,\u201d a spokesperson for Foreign Minister Winston Peters said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>Beijing says Taipei has no right to conduct foreign relations and views visits by foreign lawmakers to the island as defying China\u2019s claims of sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p>Peters\u2019 spokesperson said the officials\u2019 visit was \u201cnot inconsistent with New Zealand\u2019s One China policy,\u201d which includes acknowledgment of Beijing\u2019s claim that Taiwan is a province of China. Lawmakers in New Zealand decide individually whether to join delegations traveling abroad and such visits usually include representatives from multiple political parties. <\/p>\n<p>Lawmaker Laura McClure from the libertarian ACT party said that the \u201cdemand\u201d for an apology was \u201cfrankly insulting\u201d and she wouldn\u2019t give one.<\/p>\n<p>Duncan Webb, from the center-left Labour Party, said New Zealand valued democratic institutions and the right to engage with partners abroad. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the cost of doing that is to be excluded from China for a year, I will pay that price,\u201d Webb said in an email. <\/p>\n<p>Relations between Wellington and Beijing have in recent years been <span>largely positive<\/span>.
