They were invaded in 1982 under orders from Argentina\u2019s then-military dictatorship, triggering <span>a 10-week war<\/span> won by Britain.<\/p><p>\u201cThe World Cup might not be ours, but the Falkland Islands definitely are,\u201d a spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Thursday. \u201cSelf-determination rests with the islanders and our commitment to the Falklands will never waver.\u201d<\/p><p>Starmer supported calls for FIFA to investigate, the spokesperson said, after U.K. Business Secretary Peter Kyle said the players\u2019 behavior was \u201centirely inappropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<iframe class=\"ap-embed\" frameborder=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/interactives.ap.org\/world-cup-2026-tracker\/?key=ap-06B3SLMAUK\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>FIFA can prosecute Argentina\u2019s players and soccer federation because its  prohibits at stadiums any \u201cmessage that is not appropriate for a sports event\u201d including those of \u201ca political, ideological, religious or offensive nature.\u201d<\/p><p>The FIFA fines for political messaging range from around $5,000 to $20,000. FIFA was approached for comment Thursday.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Argentine President Javier Milei described the players\u2019 celebration with the banner as \u201cperfectly valid,\u201d saying the message \u201creflects a sentiment shared by all Argentines.\u201d But he said he expected FIFA to sanction the team with a fine.<\/p><p>\u201cWhat the players do is understandable; they get carried away by their emotions, they act on impulse, and that will likely lead to discussions about a fine,\u201d Milei told a local Buenos Aires radio station.<\/p><div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<bsp-jw-player>\n<\/bsp-jw-player>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The British government on Thursday urged FIFA to investigate Argentina\u2019s team after players posed with a banner claiming sovereignty over the contested Falkland Islands. They banned us from bringing (signs) into the stadium, forgetting that we carry them in our blood and in our hearts.\u201d<\/p><p>A FIFA disciplinary case under previous leadership <span>banned a South Korea player<\/span> for two 2014 World Cup qualifying games because he held up a similar banner about a territorial claim against Japan at the 2012 London Olympics. Argentina plays Spain in East Rutherford, New Jersey.<\/p><h2>Previous cases<\/h2>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Argentina players showed the same \u201cLas Malvinas son Argentinas\u201d slogan at a warm-up game in June 2014 in Buenos Aires for the World Cup that started days later in Brazil.<\/p><p>FIFA\u2019s <span>disciplinary panel ruling<\/span> in that case was published after the tournament finished and fined the Argentina federation 30,000 Swiss francs ($37,000).<\/p><p>In the 2012 London Olympics case, FIFA\u2019s ruling said the conduct of the South Korea player \u201ccannot be tolerated.\u201d<\/p><p>At the 2022 World Cup, FIFA fined the Serbia federation 20,000 Swiss francs ($24,800) for <span>hanging a political banner<\/span> about neighboring independent state Kosovo in the locker room before playing Brazil.
