ANKARA, Turkey (AP) \u2014 NATO\u2019s summit<\/span> in Turkey on Wednesday had threatened to go off the rails even before U.S. President Donald Trump and his counterparts sat down to work. But the leaders renewed their vow to defend each other should any of them come under attack.<\/p>\n

It came despite a fresh storm<\/span> of old Trump criticism toward U.S. allies that seemed to put his commitment in doubt. In the end, Trump told reporters, \u201cThere was a lot of love in that room. A lot of unity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had a tremendous time and I think a great success,\u201d Trump said later at a news conference.<\/p>\n

In a declaration, the leaders said their pledge to Article 5<\/span> of NATO\u2019s treaty is \u201cironclad.\u201d They said that \u201can attack on one is an attack on all.\u201d<\/p>\n

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said U.S. allies \u201cwarmly welcomed President Trump\u2019s leadership.\u201d It jarred after Trump had insisted his America should take control of Greenland<\/span>, a semiautonomous part of ally Denmark.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe message from this summit is simple. NATO delivers,\u201d Rutte said. <\/p>\n

Iran strikes and a possible NATO role<\/h2>\n

Most of the time, U.S. military strikes are ordered up while the president is close to home.<\/p>\n

So Trump\u2019s decision to authorize retaliatory strikes on Iran<\/span> shortly after leaving a NATO leaders\u2019 dinner was unusual, and underscored a beef he has with the alliance.<\/p>\n

Trump has complained bitterly that allies didn\u2019t help him keep the Strait of Hormuz open.<\/p>\n

Intriguingly, Rutte refused to rule out a future role for the alliance in the war.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously Iran is outside NATO territory,\u201d Rutte said. He added: \u201cIf helpful, NATO is always willing to play a role. But first now, let\u2019s see what happens over the coming days and weeks.\u201d It\u2019s something likely to please Trump.<\/p>\n

NATO prides itself as a defensive alliance focused on protecting the transatlantic area. Its last venture outside, into Afghanistan, ended in chaos and allies are reluctant to get drawn into any other war.<\/p>\n

Let them have Patriots, and perhaps F-35s<\/h2>\n

Trump said the U.S. will give a license for its Patriot air defense systems<\/span> to be made overseas for Ukraine to counter Russian missile attacks \u2014 a huge coup for Ukraine, which sorely needs the technology for a war now in its fifth year. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll give them the right to make Patriots<\/span>. We\u2019ll show them how to do it,\u201d Trump said as he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. \u201cI think they can produce them pretty quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Patriots are expensive, in high demand and take a long time to produce. Zelenskyy has for years been asking for more, and recently for a license so that Ukraine can manufacture its own, and faster.<\/p>\n

In an uplifting moment for the summit host, Trump announced that the U.S. was prepared to lift sanctions on Turkey, opening the way for the possible sale of F-35 jets to the country, despite objections from Israel.<\/p>\n
